Giving Back with a smile...

When I started yoga in 1997, I loved the way I felt.  My constant good feelings and transformations were bijas (seeds) for something more.  The something more for me is giving back. The feelings and rewards I receive from giving back is priceless.  I’ve always helped in the non-profit world any way I could, but now with the gift of yoga within me, things are limitless.  It’s not just that I use yoga to help others in need, it is that yoga helps to manifest that authentic inner voice that then acts as a guide to help me have a “take on the world” mentality.  Andrew Harvey’s term for this is “sacred activist” and that is what I am proud to be...a person taking her passions and making differences with them.  Here are some things I am passionately involved in and if you’d like to “give back” and join me in any of these amazing causes and make a difference, please contact me.  om love, debby

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

I am excited to be a part of Kula for Karma and a proud member of its Advisory Board. Through this organization, I have the honor of teaching Veterans each week and through this have been invited to participate in empowering Yellow Ribbon Weeks at Fort Dix.  These Veterans are sleeping better, feeling better and swear by yoga.  Kula for Karma was started by my now dear friend Geri Topfer in 2007 to bring yoga to less fortunate populations at little or no cost. My heart was thumping in a major way when I first sat down with Geri and Penni and discussed Kula for Karma in 2008. I knew that this was one of the things I was meant to be a part of for the indefinite future.

“Imagine all the people, living life in peace.”--John Lennon

Cory A. Booker had this wonderful mantra at his 2009 State of the City of Newark address--  “We will rise.”  I have been pulled to helping Newark for the five years and ever since getting to know the Mayor and his staff better, that pulling has been more forceful!  I am currently working on some really great things for Newark.  One of them is  Newark Yoga Movement, a 501c3 non-profit,I founded in 2009.  Our mission is to bring yoga to all 41,000 students to help them reach their full potential through increased focus, peacefulness, confidence and the unleashing of creativity.  Dr. Clifford Janey, Newark’s School  former Superintendent publicly endorsed this program as has Mayor Booker.  Mayor Booker is currently a NYM Advisory Board member along with Dr. Clement Price, Shiva Rea, Gurmukh, Stephen Cope, Sat Bir Khalsa, Tao Porchon-Lynch and Peter Sterios.   The program launched in October, 2009 after successful 2009 pilot testing.  The children love yoga.  The educators love yoga.

Since our launch, over 9000 students and 1000 educators have received the gift of yoga.  Our research indicates that  71% of these kids want yoga in their schools regularly!!  The rewards after seeing how these kids respond are endless.  In 2011, Newark Yoga Movement had the good fortune of having a marketing plan completed for the organization as part of graduate studies course.  An outcome of this plan is our tagline “Stretching Minds” created by Pamela Kirkbride.  We are endlessly grateful for her friendship and her ongoing work.  For more information or to make a donation that will be put to amazing use--$30 can teach up to 60 students yoga one time--go to www.newarkyogamovement.org.  Want to be involved?  Anyone can join in this program of transformation.  We are all-inclusive and build consensus and great collaboration.  email:  newarkyogamovement@gmail.com

I am committed to helping this city because there is so much unlimited potential waiting to blossom. and when it does, I want to be there!”--Debby Kaminsky

I can’t say enough about how rewarding it is to teach yoga to kids in Newark.  We’ve taught yoga to All Stars Project, another organization I am passionate about helping, since April 2009.  Look at these children!

Global Mala was conceived by Shiva Rea in 2007 as a way to help raise awareness and funding for some of our world’s biggest issues.  As catalyst for this project, she helped to inspire and bring together thousands of people from around the world and 100’s of yoga studios for helping issues such as AIDS, war and poverty and our environment.  This now annual event, coincides with UN’s International Day of Peace and the Fall Equinox. Global Mala NJ 2012 is Sept. 23rd at Newark Public School’s $24 million New School Stadium .  We will be

hosting our annual kids mala as well for children Kindergarten through 8th grade.  Tons of excitement including  Cory Booker who plans to return and other special guests, music, vendors, food, chair and thai massage and amazing gift bags for the first 250 who sign up.
